"he set up his tripod and began to take photographs: east, west, all directions, shifting his camera with precision, as though he had marked out a grid on the ground. the camera clicked and clicked, like a gecko in his mating season.
i remembered the photographs in his house and wondered why he was never shown in them. was it because he had always been travelling on his own? 'let me take some pictures for you, so you can be in them as well', i offered.
he declined. 'my face would only spoil the pictures' ."
